Roadside Assistance & Emergency Road Service

Roadside assistance and recovery get used interchangeably, and they aren't the same thing. Recovery means your vehicle goes on a truck. Roadside assistance means someone comes out, fixes the problem where you're standing, and you carry on driving.

Most of what stops a journey is small. A flat tyre and no usable spare. Fuel gauge optimism on a rural A-road. Keys sitting on the driver's seat with the doors locked. A warning light that came on ten miles back and has been getting more insistent ever since. None of those need a flatbed, and none of them should cost you the price of a recovery.

What we bring is the kit to deal with the common failures on the spot — jacking and wheel-changing gear, a fuel can, lockout tools, and enough diagnostic ability to tell you whether that light means pull over now or get to a garage this week.

The honest limit: we're a recovery firm with roadside capability, not a mobile garage. We won't be replacing a clutch on the hard shoulder. What we will do is either get you moving or get you off the road safely, and tell you which it's going to be before we set off.

The big breakdown organisations work on subscription. You pay every year whether you break down or not, and what you get depends on which tier you bought. If you're not a member when the car stops you can usually still get help — you just join on the spot, at a price set by someone who knows you have no alternative.

We don't work that way. No policy, no tier, no membership. You ring when something's gone wrong, we quote the job, and you pay for that callout. If you never need us again, you've spent nothing else.

For a lot of people that's simply cheaper. If you're paying an annual subscription and calling it out once every three years, the maths isn't in your favour. It's also the sensible option if you've let cover lapse, if the car isn't the one named on your policy, or if you're driving something a standard policy won't touch.

What you don't get is a national network, and we won't pretend otherwise. What you do get is emergency road service from people who answer their own phone and will tell you honestly whether we're the right call.

Three jobs make up most of our roadside work.

Tyres are the commonest. Plenty of newer cars have no spare at all — just a can of sealant that's useless against a sidewall tear — and plenty of drivers who do have a spare have never tried getting a locking wheel nut off in the rain. We carry proper jacking equipment and can change a wheel safely at the roadside. If there's no serviceable spare, the car goes on the truck to a tyre fitter.

Wrong fuel is far more common than people admit, and what matters is the first minute. If you've realised at the pump and haven't started the engine, it's usually a drain and a flush. Once it's been started, the wrong fuel has been through the pump and into the lines and the job grows considerably. Either way, don't start it to check.

Lockouts vary. Some cars we can open at the roadside without a mark on them; some modern locking systems really do need an auto-locksmith or a dealer key. We'll tell you which one you're dealing with rather than spending an hour making it worse.

Some faults look roadside-fixable and turn out not to be. That call is better made early than after an hour at the kerbside.

Anything involving the cambelt, the clutch or overheating is a recovery job. So is a car that's cut out at speed with no warning, a strong smell of fuel or burning, and any fault with the brakes or the steering. Running an engine that has already overheated is one of the quickest ways to turn a repairable fault into a new engine.

The same goes for anything electrical on a hybrid or an electric car. High-voltage systems are not something to be poking at on a hard shoulder in the dark.

In those cases the vehicle goes on the flatbed and we take it to your garage. You'll know at the point of the phone call, or as soon as we've had a look, which of the two you're getting — and we won't charge you for a roadside callout and then recover you anyway.

Whoever is coming, the few minutes before they arrive are the ones that matter most.

On a motorway or dual carriageway, get the vehicle as far left as you can, put the hazards on, and get everyone out through the passenger doors and behind the barrier — up the bank if there is one. Don't stand between your car and the traffic, don't attempt a tyre change on the offside, and leave animals in the vehicle unless there's a genuine emergency. If you can't get off the carriageway at all, stay belted in with the hazards on and ring 999.

On an ordinary road you have more room to think. Hazards on, sidelights if visibility is poor, and stand somewhere you can be seen but not hit. A warning triangle is worth putting out at a sensible distance on anything other than a motorway.

Then tell us exactly where you are. A marker post number, a junction, a nearby business or a location pin from your phone gets us to you far faster than a road name. Local roadside assistance only helps if we can find you, and 'the A-road near the roundabout' has cost people twenty minutes before now.
