Collecting from an auction
Auction collection has a clock on it, and that's the part people underestimate.
Most sites allow a short window — often only a few days — before storage charges start, and they accrue daily whether you've arranged transport or not. A car bought on a Friday and collected the following week can cost meaningfully more than the same car collected on the Monday.
Salvage auctions like Copart are their own procedure. The vehicle is frequently a non-runner, sometimes without keys, and access is by gate with paperwork rather than someone handing over a set of keys in a car park. We need the lot or stock number, the release authority in whatever form the site issues it, and confirmation that you've paid — they won't release the vehicle to us otherwise.
General and dealer auctions are simpler, but the principle is identical: whoever is holding the vehicle needs to know we're coming and needs to be satisfied we're entitled to take it. Send the paperwork when you book rather than on the morning of collection and the whole thing is routine.
Buying at a distance
The other half of this work is private sales.
You've found the right car three hundred miles away. Driving it home means insuring a vehicle you haven't inspected, on a policy arranged over the phone, then a long motorway run in something unfamiliar with no real idea of its history. Plenty of people do exactly that, and most get away with it.
Transport removes the question. The car goes on the truck, it arrives on your driveway, and if it turns out to have a fault you haven't already put three hundred miles on it discovering that.
It's also the only legal option in a good number of cases. A vehicle that isn't taxed, isn't MOT'd, or isn't insured in your name can't be driven on the road at all, however well it runs.
What goes on the truck
Cars are the bulk of it, but the bed doesn't much mind what shape the load is.
Vans and light commercials up to 3.5 tonnes, pickups, quad bikes, small tractors and compact plant are all regular work. So are motorbikes, and so is anything on a pallet that used to be a vehicle.
The two questions that decide the job are always the same: what does it weigh, and does it roll. A quad that rolls is trivial. A seized tractor that doesn't is a winch job and wants planning. Neither is a problem — the second is simply a longer booking and should be priced as one.
Collecting on your behalf
We're often collecting from someone you've never met, on a day you're at work.
That works perfectly well, and it works best when three things are settled before the day. The seller or the site knows who's coming and roughly when. We have whatever authority the vehicle needs releasing. And we know where the keys are, or that there aren't any.
At the far end, somebody needs to be able to take delivery, or there needs to be somewhere safe and agreed to leave the vehicle. A car left on a driveway nobody was expecting is how the straightforward version of this becomes the difficult one.
None of it is complicated. It just wants sorting the day before rather than at eight on the morning of collection.

Whatever the seller or site requires to release the vehicle — a release note, a paid invoice, a lot number, or in a private sale sometimes just a phone call from you to them. Tell us which and we'll bring it.
Can you move a car that doesn't run?
Absolutely — the flatbed and winch handle non-runners as easily as driveable vehicles. The question that matters is whether the wheels still turn, because one that won't roll goes on skates and takes longer.
How far will you travel?
Anywhere in mainland UK. Distance is factored into the quote, with no hidden fees at the far end.
Do I need to be there for collection?
No. We collect from sellers, dealers and auctions on customers' behalf all the time. What we do need is for the far end to be sorted — someone to take delivery, or somewhere safe and agreed to leave it.
What else can you transport?
